Typographics 2024

Client: Typographics 2024

Year: 2023

Project Brief

The Typographics project was a collaborative push to harness the expressive power of type in creating fresh marketing for TYPOGRAPHICS 2024, an event celebrating the art of typography. Our aim was to show how type can do more than share information, it can carry emotion and personality too.

We explored styles, scales, and layouts to build a visual language that captured the energy of the event. Research into contemporary trends, standout campaigns, and the emotional impact of typefaces shaped our approach, helping us design work that felt both current and distinctive.

The outcome was a suite of posters, social media graphics, and digital banners that combined bold typography, playful compositions, and vibrant colours. Working as a team let us push each other’s ideas further and experiment with new ways of using type in marketing.

At its core, the project was about sparking excitement and engagement while highlighting the role of typography in shaping design. It reinforced type not just as a tool, but as a powerful art form at the heart of visual communication.

Process

The project began with a deep dive into typefaces, testing how different styles shape design and communication. We worked with everything from classic serifs to modern sans serifs, exploring the moods and messages each conveyed. This process highlighted just how much subtle shifts in type can transform visual communication.

To push the experimentation further, I brought a typewriter into the mix. It added a tactile, authentic edge, producing text that was both intentional and unpredictable. By jamming keys, varying pressure, and embracing imperfections, I created layered overlays and textures that gave the designs a raw, organic quality.

Placing this analogue grit alongside digital typography opened up new ground. It showed how traditional methods and modern design can play off each other, turning type into both a communicator and an artistic medium.

We documented our findings as we went, using them to shape concepts for the final marketing materials. This hands on exploration not only informed our creative direction but also fostered collaboration, encouraging us to push boundaries and capture the spirit of TYPOGRAPHICS 2024 in bold, inventive ways.

Outcomes

The final outcomes for this project included a logotype, poster series, social media page, information booklet and website.

Logotype

The logotype for TYPOGRAPHICS 2024 was designed to be bold, memorable, and full of energy. We chose a vivid palette of red, black, and white to capture creativity and intensity while ensuring the logo would stand out across all marketing materials. A thick, legible typeface gave the design clarity and strength, making the event name instantly recognisable.

To inject modern edge and playfulness, we layered in a glitch effect. This distortion added movement and texture, symbolising the evolving nature of typography and the tension between tradition and innovation. It elevated the logo beyond simple text, turning it into a statement piece.

The result was a logotype that felt dynamic and alive, perfectly aligned with the spirit of TYPOGRAPHICS 2024. It delivered a strong visual identity that not only grabbed attention but also celebrated type as both craft and art.

Posters

The posters were designed to balance clarity with experimentation, delivering essential information while showcasing type as a visual art form. Each one highlighted a different aspect of TYPOGRAPHICS 2024, from talks to workshops, giving us room to explore a wide range of styles.

For key details like dates, locations, and speakers, we used clean, legible typefaces to ensure accessibility. Alongside this, we introduced playful and unconventional typography that injected energy and captured the creative spirit of the event.

By placing order and experimentation side by side, the posters became both informative and striking. They not only communicated the event clearly but also embodied the artistry of TYPOGRAPHICS 2024, inviting audiences to dive into the diverse world of type.

Social media page

The social media page featured nine tiles that acted as key touchpoints for sharing details about TYPOGRAPHICS 2024. Each tile spotlighted highlights, speaker lineups, or workshop offerings, all presented in a clear, consistent style that matched the event’s visual identity.

Bold typography and a cohesive colour palette made the designs instantly recognisable and easy to engage with. The tiles were crafted to grab attention quickly while reflecting the creativity and energy of the event, encouraging viewers to share them within their networks.

This approach not only built excitement and anticipation but also reinforced typography’s role as the heart of visual communication, making the online presence as dynamic as the event itself.

Booklet

The booklet was designed to turn dense text into something visually engaging and easy to explore. By experimenting with layouts, we played with column widths, bold typographic elements, and creative spacing to break away from the monotony of traditional text formatting.

Graphics and images were woven in alongside the text, adding context and keeping the reading experience dynamic. This mix of words and visuals transformed large bodies of content into something accessible, stimulating, and worth lingering over.

The result was more than just an information resource. It doubled as a piece of design in its own right, embodying the creative spirit of TYPOGRAPHICS 2024 and showing how typography can both inform and inspire.

Website

The website was designed to present the TYPOGRAPHICS 2024 timetable and key details in a clear, visually engaging way that put user experience first. We built a clean, intuitive layout where visitors could move easily through sections and find what they needed without clutter or confusion.

Clear headings, organised categories, and thoughtful design elements kept the interface simple and accessible. Engaging visuals and a cohesive colour scheme added energy, ensuring the site was not only functional but also a reflection of the event’s creativity and vibrancy.

This approach made the site both practical and inviting, encouraging visitors to explore schedules, speakers, and workshops while building excitement and a sense of community around the event.
